The Applied Stem Cell Conservation Fund is designed to accelerate the application and utility of stem cell technology in wildlife conservation.
Our team is seeking projects that can catalyze progress in this field, as well as demonstrate the value of stem cell technology in conservation. Projects should aim to (1) deliver impactful, conservation-oriented outcomes and (2) advance essential and foundational technologies.
Our vision is to promote the use of stem cell technology in species recovery and conservation strategies. To increase the adoption of biotechnologies in conservation, we believe that showcasing successful interventions (use cases) that demonstrate the value of incorporating these technologies is essential. We’re looking for proposals that have this potential.
We encourage proposals that prioritize high-risk, high-reward ideas with the capacity to directly impact endangered species, overcome research bottlenecks, or demonstrate innovative applications of stem cells in conservation.
Timeline:
- Deadline for LOI Submission: February 14th, 2025, 5:00 PM PST
- Invitation to Submit Full Proposal: February 28, 2025, 5:00 PM PST
- Full Proposal (by invitation only): April 14th, 2025, 5:00 PM PST
- A full proposal template description and requirements will be available when invited to submit a proposal.
Your application must include the following information:
- Research Area: One of the areas mentioned above, or Other.
- Ask Amount: Provide your requested funding amount. We may work with you to increase/reduce your scope to make the most of available funding.
-
- Project Duration (in months): What timeframe do you anticipate requiring to complete this work?
- Conservation Aim (100 words): Proposals should center on a conservation-oriented goal.
- Species: All animal and plant taxa are eligible. Both individual species or broader taxa are acceptable. Target species may come from any global region. At-risk species are preferred, however, proof-of-concept studies may utilize related domestic, agricultural, or laboratory models.
- Deliverables (100 words): Provide a list of proposed project outcomes.
- Conservation Impact (100 words): Describe the conservation outcomes that may result from the successful completion of your project.
- A Letter of Intent (800 words) detailing your proposed project. Indicate whether any necessary permits have already been secured. Please also indicate any potentially relevant collaborators and partners in this proposed work.
Research Areas
Stem cell technology has a critical role to play in conservation, opening up reproductive possibilities, resilience to disease and environmental change, and creating an infinite resource for biobanking. However, developing robust working protocols for diverse species remains a challenge. The five areas below are intended to inspire applicants, but we welcome additional concepts that align with our goals. Revive & Restore prioritizes proposals with a clear path to conservation impact.
- Wildlife Disease
- Facilitated Adaptation
- Reproduction for Endangered Species
- Biobanking for Conservation
- Breakthroughs in Reprogramming
Funding Expectations
Through this opportunity, we aim to support projects lasting one to two years that lead to a breakthrough use of stem cells to help solve critical conservation challenges. We will accept proposals ranging from $50,000 – $400,000 USD. Funding will depend on the volume of submissions.
How To Apply
We are currently accepting Letters of Intent (LOIs). Based on review by our team, selected applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal.
To submit your LOI, please register to use our online grants management system by clicking here.
